World War I was a global war centered in Europe. In it's wake it left over 16,000,000 casualties, Nine million of those were soldiers and the other seven million were civilians. There were two opposing alliances, the Allies (France, Russia, United Kingdom, and the United States) and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria). The war was triggered after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria on June 28th, 1914. The allies were able to defeat the central powers after a string of successful offensives in Spring of 1918. The Austria-Hungarian Empire agreed to an armistice on November 4th, 1918 and The German Empire on November 11th, 1918. By the end of the war the Austria-Hungary Empire, German Empire, and the Ottoman Empire seized to exist. An after cause of this conflict is the creation of the League of Nations whose purpose was to avoid the repetition of such a conflict.
